A dilemma

I don't have that much experience working in the US. My first job was at GNC as a part- time sale associates. After a few months at the store my performance improved notoriously. I was the only girl working at the store and had a good working- relationship with the manager and co-workers, except with the assistant manager. He was very rude with me. I was in charge of the store every Friday for inventory and Sundays with another co- worker. This co- worker and friend of mine was buying some product for his personal use with some additional discounts that we, as employees, are not allow to. A few months after a numerous amount of activities of the same kind, the manager noticed that the name of the card used was my co-workers.
On the other side, my managers supervisor, in one of the inspections noticed several times in which the store has not open on- time but very late. The person opening the store on such times was the assistant manager. Beside all these latenesses, he also had numerous complaints on his record and a final noticed for such complaints previously filed. The supervisor fired him immediately. Meanwhile, the manager faced my co-worker and he opt to resign before the bomb exploited and everybody looses their jobs.
The manager knew that all those activities took place in the same shift as mine, but he didn't ask me anything about it. Everything on my record was good so, the supervisor and manager offered me the assistant manager position at the store.
Now, shouldn't the manager have called my attention or say anything to me about my co- worker and all those activities during my shift? Should I take the position offered (more money and benefits- better position) knowing that what my friend did was wrong and that my reputation and loyalty are on trial? Is it ethical for me to accept? Was it ethical for the manager not to say anything to me and offer the position to somebody else?

  1. Hi there, I understand parcially your situation since something similar happened to me a couple of years ago when I was working at Chase Bank. I recommend you to take that position since, as you mentioned, you did not do anything wrong but your co-worker. I truly belive that work is work and friendship is friendshil and consequently they should be separete. You had been loyal to the company even though that certain unethical situations happens at your shift, not quite sure if it happens in your presence. As an Assistante Manager you will not only have more income but you will make sure the store will be run under good ethical standards and that's everyone must follow the rules. Not quite sure why are you surprise they offered you the position regardless of what happened.."The one who does not owe anything, should not fear to anything"

  2. Little Shark:
Yes, all those irregular activities happened on my shifts when I was supposed to close registers and attach all kind of receipts for the day (I had to notice it). I was surprised because there were other employees at the store who had been there longer than me. Also, with clean records and puctuality. The only wrong thing I did was to keep my mouth shut. Maybe it is not a big deal but my parents didn't teach me that. I took it either way...

  3. It's an odd situation but you make a pretty good case for taking the job. If you feel like clearing the air with your boss go ahead. You haven't done anything wrong and if you feel strongly about having your friend come back to work then say so.

  4. Wow! that must have been an insane day at work! I must agree with the previous remarks and say that you did nothing "wrong". This situation can benefit you and your store. Lets say you take the job, you will benefit with better pay and whatever else. Your store will benefit because now you know what your co-worker was doing, that co-worker knows you didnt say anything so there should be some respect. Hopefully that respect will be reciprocated when you become manager and let your co-worker know not to do it again. Store wins and you wim! Now about telling your boss the info. May not be such a good idea. Either way all this information really depends on what type of people you co-worker and manager are. Try to be a good judge of character and proceed with caution. The situation can become very sticky! Good luck!
