My vision towards the Future

The task was to come up with 3 to 5 goals as visions for my future. I have several goals... some of them are a little bit realistic, but others are not impossible but REALLY hard to achieve. At least for me...

1) My first vision is to finish school. Yeah, I know that is the same goal for all of us, but mine is a little bit more. I want to finish my BBA, go for a Masters to complete and take the CPA (become certified) and then go for my PHD to be able to teach Accounting or Spanish at college. Currently I'm a junior and have completed my Associates Degree in Arts. I also have a scholarship and am trying my best to have good grades to keep it, because with all the education I desire to get it is TOO MUCH MONEY to invest.

2) My second vision is complimentary to the first one. After I get my CPA I will like to open a business. My father has always been a great influence to me in that business sense. He has open and close several businesses in his lifetime. He has had good and wealthy times as bad times. I would love to have the gods he has to just go and open it, but I am afraid. I want to open a tax office. I haven't even started my Auditing classes yet but I want to open a business. Probably if I was in my origin country I would have done it already, but this big city intimidates me a bit. Even though I am in-love with it. Hopefully I will do it someday, hopefully not that far away.
I don't picture myself working in a company. I have done so, but I try and still can't see myself being old and working for somebody else. I know that you have to start somewhere, but I still don't see myself there. Maybe not a tax office but a business, perhaps with my husband and not alone. But it is a HUGE ambition I have.

3) I want to have two more kids. I love children and my daughter is my life. I am very old fashion in the sense that I enjoy big families. It is a vision because at the moment I am not working and a child is a HUGE investment. I am not working now, because I don't have anybody to take care of my baby. I could put her in a daycare, but I am petrified to think that somebody can hurt her. Unfortunately nor my family or my husbands family live in the US. I am waiting for her to start talking to be able to put her in one of those places, like that she will be able to tell me if something is not going right (hopefully she will tell me). I think my biggest problem is that I don't easily trust in people, specially with things related to topics as important as my family.
That is the reason having more kids is a vision. If I do, it will interfere (actually delay) big time with my professional ambitions. My husband wants one more (because of money), but I want 2 more minimum. I don't come from a big family at all.

Those are the most important goals I have, the rest are just material things that money can buy. Things like a house for the family, cars, and trips. You know... I want to live the American dream, assets and debts.
I know it may sound as a fantasy or so, but those are my most important goals in life. Personally and professionally speaking.

  1. Hey Stefania,

Good for you! I really like goals; I think its important to challenge your self to do better whether it’s professional or in your personal life. I also think having a family (big or small) is precious; I too want to have kids in the near future. I’m from a big family and I think family is every important.

  2. My grandfather always used to say shoot for the stars and your almost guaranteed to make the moon. I think that was very good advice considering that we should always want ourselves to be the very best that we can be. Consider yourself; You wish to gain a PH.D. Which is naturally a very difficult achievement considering the amount of time and dedication that it takes to achieve that goal. Even if you do not achieve the degree, you will still be blessed to achieve a Masters, CPA certification, or Bachelors degree, which are all great achievements also. If you do gain a PH.D., well that is just perfection. Your father seems to be quite the entrepreneur, and I would bet he would be a very good business model to follow. I can be a little intimidated by the big city also. Something that helps me with dealing with the big city is the fact that more people is synonymous with more opportunity, and more opportunity is synonymous with higher expected profits. This is the reason that small businesses are far more successful in NYC than they are in Nassau or Suffolk counties, and NY State small businesses are typically better off than they are in states like Kansas or Kentucky. A business person should be welcoming of the large city; Especially an aspiring CPA who wants to get into tax code. In a money conscious city like NY, tax specialists are a very valuable commodity. I disagree with your assumption of opening your own business as being a huge ambition. In fact I would argue that unlike most visions, this is one which you hold entirely within your grasp. You will either essentially choose to open a store and work for yourself, or work for a big company. I understand that the investment required is very high, and that it is difficult to have a successful business, but that does not take away from the fact that it is still dependent on your decision of starting or not starting a business. I think that it is fantastic that you are so involved and care so much about your daughter. Not every parent cares as much as you do. I think 2 things regarding your vision of a big family 1. The more the better. 2. Raising children is a huge investment of time, energy, and money. The fact that you are aware of both of these attributes bodes well for your family and your future child. Planning is very crucial towards achieving a certain goal and as we have learned, one of the first steps of planning is to determine where you are in relation to meeting your objective. I think you are very well positioned and have the ambition to reach and fulfill your vision. Good Luck!!!

  3. How can you handle all these now with school, work and taking care of a kid? It's a great joy to have a little kid in the house especially a daughter where you can dress her up, so adorable. I really hope you will accomplish these goals and have a very happy family filled of joys with healthy children.

  4. One word... WOW!!!I know must of us want to pursue a Master degree but not a PH.D so I am very optimistic that with your hard work and dedication, you will not only have your visions accomplished but a little bit more.
In regards of my blog, I have been spending more quality time with my family, be there when they need me (like this very short trip to Colombia in Spring break). However, it is hard when you have to manage between work and school.:(
You make me feel so passionate about family by reading the way you talk about your daugther.. I gues she gives you that extra "boost" to make things happen for you.
    Good Luck and work hard!!!

  5. I also want to finish the school and get a CPA too! But I do not want to open my own busienss or neither the taxation office. I am not planning to be an accountant to get a CPA. I am planning to be a financial lawyer.
Also, if I do get married, I want to have three children too or adopt one. I think the children are just lovely and beautiful. I wish you a best luck in everything and hope you achieve these visions! Just don't give up!

  6. its great that you have such an order to your vision. It seems that if you follow your plan you will be successful in bringing life to your vision, however I hope you reconsider your doubts. I believe that doubts can break vision which I see as fragile. Be strong, have faith in yourself and know that you will achieve if you try. I believe positive thinking is a key ingredient to making visions come true, SO THINK POSITIVE!!! =)

  8. I share your vision for getting your CPA. I am also an accounting major and I have similar feelings and plans about having my own business. But I would suggest you to try to work for someone for several years, and then you can apply this experience in your own business. And don’t be afraid to open your own business, a lot experienced accountants own private firms. I think that your plans to finish college and to have two more children are just a matter of time ). I wish you good luck!

  9. Hey Stephanie,

I agree… a lot of times students are not thinking about marriage and kids in college. However, for those of us who are married you tend to view life differently. I think ost college students view marriage as a destination point in there lives. However, I don’t think of marriage and having kids as “reaching” a destination. I mean you don’t just get married and that’s it, life’s over…With anything in life it’s what you make of it. I also think having a personal life that you’re very comfortable and happy with should be important to all of us, we don’t need to have a lot of kids or see our relatives all the time, but we do need to feel connect to something bigger than ourselves, like family (the friendships we developed, the close connections), or friendships with non-relatives, the relationships we develop over a long period of time, whether it be with friends or family.

You’re doing fine… my motto is just stick to it (whatever you doing) and don’t doubt yourself, and eventually you’ll get there. The biggest supporter we can ever depend on is ourselves…Don’t forget to celebrate your accomplishments either. I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors and do hope we meet again.
